چکیده

This study presents the development of a video game with audio and haptic interfaces that allows for the stimulation of orientation and mobility skills in people who are blind through the use of virtual environments. We evaluate the usability and the impact of the use of an audio and haptic-based videogame on the development of orientation and mobility skills in school-age blind learners. The results show that the interfaces used in the videogame are usable and appropriately designed, and that the haptic interface is as effective as the audio interface for orientation and mobility purposes. © 2012 The Authors. Videogaming for wayfinding skills in children who are blind

There are several problems faced by people who are blind when navigating through unfamiliar spaces, and especially open spaces. One way to mitigate these problems is by getting to know the spaces prior to actual navigation, through the use of virtual environments represented through audio and haptic interfaces. In exploring the possibilities for further improving navigation through such spaces;...

Listen what I do: blind learners programming through audio

The development of programming skills is a motivating issue in computer science. Programming languages have been increasingly used to map end-users needs and mental models. The number of users who can program or learn how to program have been expanded. The majority of these languages are focused on sighted users. This study introduces APL, an Audio Programming Language for blind learners. APL i...

Haptic Support for Spatial Cognitive Mapping 1 Running Head: Haptic Support for Spatial Cognitive Mapping Haptic-feedback Support for the Cognitive Mapping of Unknown Spaces by People Who Are Blind Haptic Support for Spatial Cognitive Mapping 2

Mental mapping of spaces, and of the possible paths for navigating these spaces, is essential for the development of efficient Orientation and Mobility (O&M) skills. Most of the information required for this mental mapping is gathered through the visual channel. People who are blind lack this information, and in consequence they are required to use compensatory sensorial channels and alternativ...

Exploration of Interface Usability in a Haptic 3d Virtual Labyrinth for Visually Impaired Users

In this paper, an experimental study is presented on navigation in a 3D virtual environment by blind and visually impaired people with haptic and audio interaction. A simple 3D labyrinth is developed with haptic and audio interfaces to allow blind and visually impaired persons to access a three-dimensional Virtual Reality scene through senses of touch and hearing. The user must move from inside...
